Acid wear can only be diagnosed by a dentist. At home, you can pay close attention to how your teeth look and feel. Some telltale signs dentists look for include:

TranslucencyTeeth may lose their brightness or appear translucent at the biting edges
Discolouration / yellowingPearly whites can begin to appear yellow as tooth enamel (white) wears away and the underlying dentin (yellow) shows through
Rounded TeethAs acid wear progresses, teeth may look rounded or "sandblasted" around the surface and edges
Cracks or cuppingIn later stages of acid wear, small cracks and roughness may develop at the edges of the teeth, or dents may appear on the chewing surfaces
SensitivityYour teeth may become sensitive to cold or hot foods, drinks or cold air
